Select Wines Online Blog

SelectWinesOnline adds new world-class boutique winery to listing: White Rock Vineyards

We've added yet another stellar winery to our list of premium boutique wine producers from the Napa/Sonoma regions: White Rock Vineyards.

Read the winemaker's notes and reviews for the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2007 Chardonnay and visit their Boutique Winery page to read more about this historic vineyard.

White Rock Vineyards produces world class Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, using only the fruit from their own vineyard. The 36-acre family run estate is situated in its own small valley in the southern foothills of the Stag's Leap Range on the historic site of White Rock Vineyards, which dates back to 1870.

Wine funfacts

*One barrel of wine equals 20 cases which equals 1200 glasses

*A ton of grapes makes about 720 bottles of wine or 60 cases

*One vine annually produces between four and six bottles of wine, or between 20 and 3o glasses

*Each bottle of wine contains about 2.8 pounds of grapes; that means each five ounce glass of wine contains a little over half a pound of grapes

*There are between 15 and 18 clusters of grapes per vine

*One acre of land is home to between 900 and 1300 vines

*Napa’s wine region reputation in the world of wine is huge, yet, Napa Valley accounts for only approx. four percent of California’s total wine           production

*Napa Valley is 30 miles in length and to five miles in width

*In the late 1850’s Los Angeles had ten times as many vines as did Napa

*There are approximately 850 wineries in California. Roughly half of these sell less than 5,000 case per year

Facts are based on estimates. Exact figures may vary based on yields, planting widths, age of vines and wine grape variety among other factors

Congratulations to Elements of Sonoma wines - TWO GOLD, ONE SILVER Medals at the Sonoma Harvest Fair

One of our clients, Elements of Sonoma, recently won THREE MORE medals at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair for their hand-crafted, small production wines. We've sampled them all, and you truly can taste the quality of the "elements" that winemaker Murlin Barker maintains are critical for the best wines:  the soil, the grapes, and the winemaker's skill.

We carry FIVE wines from Elements of Sonoma...If you're looking for a truly special wine selection to serve during the holidays, check out Elements of Sonoma.

Local "Wine Buy The Case Club" Tasting a Big Success!

We hosted a tasting last night of our "Wine Buy The Case Club."  All of the wines we offer in the "Wine Buy The Case Club" are from Napa, Sonoma or Lodi boutique wineries, which means they are hand-crafted, quality vintages that are either extra inventory or need to sell in order to make room for the wineries' new releases. We'll be pouring once a month for members of the club, which is FREE if you'd like to join. You can send us a quick email and join "Wine Buy The Case Club" on the website here.

There were approximately 30 people in attendance, and we poured wines from Castle Vineyards, Barrell Stop Winery (Monet's Palate), Century Oak (a Cab and a Zin), Catacula Lake (the Sangiovese and the Old Vine Zin),  and Regalat (Zinfandel).

It's so interesting to pour from several different wineries, as opposed to several vintages from one winery! We were really surprised to find that although there were definitely favorites that almost everyone agreed on, there were "top picks" from a good number of people that were surprising to us. Not because they're not "good" wines, they ALL are! It was a good reminder to us just how subjective and personal wine tastes are!

In fact, the wine tasting event was so much fun...it occurred to us that it would be really neat to pour wines for YOU and YOUR GUESTS this holiday season...if you'd like to host a wine tasting in your home for family and friends, send us an email. We have lots of great wines to choose from, and Rick is quite the charming host!! Send us an email:  info@winebuythecaseclub.com

Fichtenberg Vineyards 2004 Merlot - Award Winner!

Purchase Fichtenberg Vineyards 2004 Merlot

We tasted this wine the other evening with our little MadMen dinner party: meatloaf, mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy and peas, with a lovely spice cake for dessert - divine! We finished off the bottle while watching Elaine's favorite show. This is a lovely wine:

"All of the high-quality fruit was estate grown on the 19-acre family vineyard and selected from the vineyard's various microclimates.

Harvested on a cool morning in mid-September 2004, at 27° brix, the wine was field blended with 3.5 tons of Merlot and .5 tons of Syrah. The grapes were crushed, pressed, barreled, and bottled at the former Davis Bynum Winery in the Russian River Valley.

The wine was created following protocol we developed during five years of award-winning amateur winemaking. After fermenting in stainless steel and open tank fermentors for 12 days, the wine was aged in one year-old French oak for 16 months and matured another 2 years in the bottle prior to release.

The wine has a deep rich mouth feel and color, complex flavors, with a long silky finish. Our Fichtenberg Vineyards Merlot pairs well with dishes and meats commonly associated with bigger, bolder varietals."
